Counselling Approaches

Counselling Approaches

  • Counselling Through Conversation

A counselling approach that allows an individual to openly express their thoughts and feelings in a caring and non-judgemental environment. Guided questioning will be used to assist the person in considering other perspectives and go deeper into self-exploration, self-understanding, and self-initiative.

  • Strength Based Approach

This counselling approach focuses on enhancing the individual's inner strength and resourcefulness. This allows individuals to recognize their inner strengths and how those strengths can support in dealing with other issues. Allowing individuals to grow from their past experiences and increase their self-esteem and self-worth. It is difficult to experience life challenges in order to reorganize our strengths.

  • Reflective Journaling

Reflective journaling provides a beautiful way for individuals to explore and express themselves. It is a safe place to ask questions about "sense of self" or the meaning and purposes in life.

It is often helpful to have questions posed for reflection that help to go deeper into explorations of thoughts, feelings and emotions.

  • Solution Focused Activities

This approach focuses on what the client identifies as their goals.

Elaine places importance on always beginning with asking what the client wants to discuss and work on in life.

In identifying both the short- and long-term goal, it provides a "road map" of which direction the client wants life to take them.

  • Art Activities

Art allows individuals to express what is going on in their unconscious mind. When individuals engage in the art, they are often able to let go of worries and anxiety for a period of time and express the thoughts and feelings behind the anxiety. Art frees the individual to express themselves in a safe and creative manner

  • Meet Therapy Dog - Wilson

Therapy dogs provide emotional support and empathy during counselling sessions. Therapy dogs sense emotions, especially sadness, grief, and anxiety. They are able to connect with people through touch to express those difficult feelings.

  • Relaxation & Mindful Activities

  • Music Activities

Music is a very powerful tool to help people feel, as well as express thoughts and feelings.

When used in a counselling approach, the deliberate use of music supports individuals to help them understand, explore and to express their thoughts and feelings.

  • Play Activities

Play is important for all individuals. However, it is used more frequently when counselling with children.

Play therapy allows the counsellor to watch children and engage in both undirected and directed play activities in a safe environment.
